Sodium Valproate Claims & Foetal Valproate Syndrome
Sodium Valproate (or Epilim) is an anti-convulsant prescribed to patients suffering from seizures. It is also prescribed to people suffering bipolar disorder and migraines.
As far as its use for epilepsy is concerned, it is not the only anti-convulsant that can be prescribed and it is certainly not a drug to be given to a patient who may be pregnant or trying for a family.
Sadly, a large number of David Gazzard’s clients are able to speak from personal experience regarding the effect of taking Sodium Valproate when pregnant.
“David Gazzard supported my family and I through a very difficult time. David is not only a first rate solicitor but if my own experience was anything to go by, he has huge empathy for his clients. I would strongly recommend him.” Mrs J, April 2017
A good example was one lady who was admitted to hospital following a seizure and despite telling the A & E Doctor that she and her husband were trying for a baby, a pregnancy test was not carried out until after she was prescribed Sodium Valproate to control her fits. As a consequence the happy news given to the client some weeks later that she was pregnant was quickly diluted by the realisation that her baby had Foetal Valproate Syndrome, which is also referred to as Sodium Valproate Syndrome.
This condition left her daughter with some very distinct physical characteristics and learning difficulties. With the help of expert evidence from Paediatric Neurologists the family was able to advance a claim for compensation.
David was one of the first solicitors in the country to take an active interest in claims involving those affected by Sodium Valproate and he is contacted regularly by families seeking advice and guidance.
The current evidence suggests that if you were exposed to Sodium Valproate during pregnancy after 2005 and your child was born suffering Foetal Valproate Syndrome and/or malformations, you should investigate whether your child has a claim.
