Sodium Valproate Claim

Foetal Valproate Syndrome

Sodium Valproate (or Epilim) is an anti-convulsant prescribed to patients suffering from seizures, as well as people suffering bipolar disorder and migraines.

Regarding its use for epilepsy, it is not the only anti-convulsant available, and certainly not a drug to give to a patient who may be pregnant or trying for a family.

Sadly, a large number of David Gazzard’s clients speak from personal experience regarding the effect of taking Sodium Valproate when pregnant.

“David Gazzard supported my family and I through a very difficult time. David is not only a first rate solicitor but if my own experience was anything to go by, he has huge empathy for his clients. I would strongly recommend him.” Mrs J, Client

A good example was a lady admitted to hospital following a seizure. Despite telling the A & E Doctor that she and her husband were trying for a baby, they failed to carry out a pregnancy test until after prescribing Sodium Valproate to control her fits. As a consequence, the happy news of her pregnancy she received some weeks later was quickly diluted by the realisation that her baby had Foetal Valproate Syndrome, also referred to as Sodium Valproate Syndrome.

This condition left her daughter with some very distinct physical characteristics and learning difficulties. With the help of expert evidence from Paediatric Neurologists the family advanced a claim for compensation.

Sodium Valproate Claim

David was one of the first solicitors in the country to take an active interest in claims involving those affected by Sodium Valproate, and families seeking advice and guidance contact him regularly.

The current evidence suggests investigating whether your child has a claim if:

  • your exposure to Sodium Valproate during pregnancy happened after 2005; and
  • your child was born suffering Foetal Valproate Syndrome and/or malformations.
