Chlorhexidine Burn Claims

As many of us will know, whenever somebody receives invasive medical treatment such as an epidural (during labour) or any type of surgery, when the integrity of the skin is broken it is very important to ensure that the surrounding area is cleaned to prevent infection.

One of the solutions commonly used to create a sterile environment is Chlorhexidine. This antibacterial is used as an antiseptic and is on the World Health Organisation’s List of Essential Medicines, a list of the most important medication needed in a basic health care system. Other common uses for Chlorhexidine include cosmetics (as an additive to creams, toothpaste, deodorants and antiperspirants) and pharmaceutical products (as a preservative in eye drops and antiseptic mouthwashes).

In high concentrations Chlorhexidine can cause burns, especially when combined with alcohols (ethanol and isopropyl alcohols). BLB Solicitors have been instructed in a number of compensation claims where people have suffered Chlorhexidine burns.

“David Gazzard supported my family and I through a very difficult time. David is not only a first rate solicitor but if my own experience was anything to go by, he has huge empathy for his clients. I would strongly recommend him.” Mrs J, April 2017

Recent Claim

Most recently, solicitor David Gazzard acted successfully for a young lady who had her back washed with Chlorhexidine prior to an epidural, but was left to sit on a pad soaked in the solution for a prolonged period of time. Consequently she suffered extensive and painful burns to her buttocks to the extent that she may now require plastic surgery.

David has over 25 years’ experience as a specialist medical negligence solicitor. In that time he has developed a wealth of expertise representing people affected by poor standards of medical care.
