The A & E Department in most hospitals is often a very busy place and consequently mistakes are made with patients receiving either substandard or inappropriate treatment.
Sometimes patients suffer injury while being moved around hospital, often as a result of falling off a trolley which doesn’t have any cot sides on it. X-rays and scans can be misinterpreted leading to a misdiagnosis and inappropriate or delayed treatment. In other circumstances the incorrect drugs can be prescribed leading to unnecessary complications.
For instance, a recent case dealt with by David concerned an elderly lady who suffered a fall whilst shopping in London. On her arrival at hospital her leg was X-rayed and a tibial plateau fracture (fracture of the knee) identified but misread by the Doctor. As a consequence she was discharged without treatment and struggled at home with significant pain for several weeks before seeing her GP and being re-admitted to hospital.
