Nerve Injury Claims
The central nervous system comprises the brain and spinal cord. Branching out from there to every part of the body is an unimaginably complex network of nerve cells. The function of these nerve cells is to form information pathways through which tiny electrical impulses can pass. If just one of these information pathways is interrupted, the function of one or more parts of the body can be affected.
The presence of these thousands of nerves crisscrossing the human body means that surgeons and other clinicians are often working miniscule distances, typically less than a millimetre, away from delicate nerves. It follows that nerve injuries can occur even when all reasonable precautions have been taken and protocols followed.
However, some nerve injuries are entirely avoidable and in these cases it may be possible to pursue a claim for compensation.
David Gazzard has over 25 years’ experience as a specialist clinical negligence solicitor. In that time, he has represented many people who have suffered avoidable nerve injuries which have often left them with life-changing symptoms and restrictions.
“David Gazzard supported my family and I through a very difficult time. David is not only a first rate solicitor but if my own experience was anything to go by, he has huge empathy for his clients. I would strongly recommend him.” Mrs J, April 2017
Common scenarios that David and his team see include :
- mistakenly cutting a nerve during surgery;
- nerve injuries sustained during birth;
- the application of inappropriate pressure on a nerve for an extended period of time;
- nerve injuries caused by poorly administered injections.
The typical symptoms experienced as a result of nerve injuries include:
- numbness, tingling and ‘pin and needles’ in the extremities;
- the feeling of burning or shooting pain;
- complete loss of a sense such as feeling or sight;
- weakened muscles in one or more part of the body.
“It’s difficult to believe it’s all over David. Just knowing that we’re now financially secure is probably the best therapy I’ve had so far. I can’t even begin to imagine what mess I’d be in if I hadn’t found you. Thank you from the whole family.” JF, December 2017
