Mistakes made during surgery can often result in nerve injuries.
In a recent case an elderly lady had a hip replacement operation and suffered damage to her superior gluteal nerve. Sadly this left her with chronic debilitating pain which she did not have prior to her surgery.
Damage to nerves can also be caused by needles used for injections (e.g facet joint injections to relieve back pain), taking blood from the arm (e.g radial nerve damage) or providing pain relief (e.g caudal epidurals). Often the consequences of nerve damage can be very serious indeed with patients developing chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS) or paralysis.

When such situations arise patients require financial compensation to cover the cost of specialist medical treatment, care and assistance at home and loss of earnings (when their condition prevents them from working).
